Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) threatened on Sunday to tighten measures to contain the coronavirus if the daily number of new infections does not decrease and if the number of Covid-19 patients requiring intensive care continues to rise. “The next few days will be days of setting the course. If the effectiveness of the partial lockdown does not provide relief, we will have to tighten the partial lockdown,” said Anschober.
Anschober described the reported positive test results – 5,933 were recorded throughout Austria on Sunday – as “still dramatically high”, while the 459 Covid 19 patients in intensive care units – an increase of 58 percent within one week – are “worrying”. It is now important to ensure that “the limits of the health care system are not exceeded”.
Anschober appealed to the population to “at least halve the number of contacts”, to keep the minimum distance, to wear mouth-nose masks, to consistently adhere to measures such as night-time curfews and to use the Stop Corona App: “Please be part of the solution now and take on some responsibility. Be especially careful when you want to make visits to retirement and nursing homes. Register in advance by telephone, have yourself tested, use a protective mask and follow the instructions and information provided by the home management”.
Due to far too many cases of infection in the old and nursing homes one has “massively intensified” the tests in this area, explained Anschober. According to this, 100,000 antigen tests were delivered to the old people’s and nursing homes in the past week. Further three million were ordered, which are to be conveyed gradually to the homes.
